Good news on public health powers say LGA Lib Dems

Liberal Democrat Councillors have welcomed the announcement today by the Health Secretary that they are to take over powers for public health from the NHS.

Cllr Richard Kemp, Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Local Government said, “This is a logical step for the Government to take. It aligns public health and a wide range of proactive ‘illness prevention’ activities with the environmental health, housing, environment, youth and education powers of councils.

"It will help us join up services in a very different way; reduce costs; and help us in our work of preventing people becoming ill in areas such as obesity and teenage pregnancy. "The LGA will be lobbying the government to show why we think the plan to ring-fence public health budgets will stop a truly effective approach to joined-up services".
